Kindergarten Curriculum
Reading
Students learn the sounds of the alphabet using pictures and word cards, blending these sounds to create words. Reading also focuses on rhyming, syllable segmentation, and word and sentence distinction. Each student has access to pre-decodable and decodable books, as well as an introductory exposure to the elements of literature.
Math
We cover a variety of concepts including the numbers up to 31, money, time (to the hour and the half-hour), measuring, addition and subtraction.
Science
Your child will study units entitled “All About Me”, “The Weather and the Seasons”, “Water”, “Animals of All Ages”, and “Caring for the Earth”. Within these units we will conduct experiments and complete activities in our workbooks.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies program has a wide range of topics such as learning to read a pictograph, reading a map, and using a globe. We discuss school, following rules, neighborhoods and communities, families and customs around the world. This program is terrific because it encourages the children to think and use their imaginations.
Health
In our health program, students are exposed to all areas of health. Each month we cover a different topic, such as “How to Stay Safe”, “The Five Senses”, “Going to the Doctor and the Dentist”, “No Drugs, No Way!”, and “Keeping Clean and Healthy”.
In addition to our five core subjects we also cover Phonics, Art, Physical Fitness, Spanish and Computer class each week.
Kindergarten includes a large academic background of five subjects: Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies and Health. We work with programs created by Harcourt, as well as a Health program entitled “The Great Body Shop”. The following is a brief description of the curriculum broken down by subject.
